UV light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength that is shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. The many wavelengths of UV light include UV-C, a short-wavelength UV light that is frequently referred to as "germicidal" UV.

Nucleic acids in a microorganism are broken down between UV-operating C's range of 200 and 300 nanometers (nm).
